It received several improvements throughout the years. These days, the CLA is known to entice buyers with its latest tech and refined performance. The 2019 Mini Cooper is the typical Mini with its distinct styling. Only a light refresh was added for this year if only to upgrade its small and classy stature. Design & Style The CLA is a shapely sedan. Its diamond-block grille bears the iconic badge of the brand. Its sexy silhouette is balanced by its swoopy design. The interior is slightly showing its age but the rendition is still sophisticated especially with the uncluttered cabin layout. Cooper’s design is mostly based on nostalgia. The standard infotainment system across all trims of the Cooper comes with a 6.5-inch display. The navigation package has an option for an 8.8-inch screen that is useful for viewing real-time traffic updates. It can also be equipped with an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. The active safety equipment, however, is all expensive additions. It also scores low on different safety tests. Performance There are two variants for the CLA’s engine. One can get up to 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and the other one can produce as much as 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. You are basically given the choice to pick which kind of performance you would like for the CLA. Both engines, however, can deliver an effortless acceleration and the driver will enjoy the quick-shifting transmission. For the Cooper, it can have either a 134-hp engine or the sportier 189-hp engine. Front-wheel drive is a standard for both engine types. Although it is fun to drive, the Cooper has a go-kart handling and may deliver a harsh ride when driven on rough road conditions. The Bottom Line The 2019 Mini Cooper is a cute vehicle, no question about that. Performance The A-Class has a 188 hp engine for sharp road performance. It may not have big power specs but the A-Class does have a capable chassis that is responsive and respectably quick. The brake pedal is not jumpy and it is immediately intuitive. The Beetle has a 2.0-liter engine that is good for up to 174 hp. It allows strong acceleration but deceleration may take a lot of effort. This is mainly because the brakes are not too quick in giving a response. The Bottom Line The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle has that loveable classic look that most people found charming. All in all, it lacks the qualities that can help it take down the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class. The Beetle sadly held on to its classic roots, especially on its technology.
