November is a beautiful time of the year where many of us jump-start our holiday plans, as well as reflect on things that we are thankful for. As we countdown the days to turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, let’s help our community get to enjoy Thanksgiving with us! This November, Mercedes-Benz of Huntington is partnering with Long Island Cares to help give back to families in need this year. Long Island Cares is Long Island’s first food bank. Founded by Harry Chapin in 1980, their organization is dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations. According to their website, Long Island Cares has stated the following facts: “ 1 in 4 adults in Long Island faced food insecurity, 34% of food insecure people in Nassau County, and 41% of food insecure people in Suffolk County, are not eligible for nutrition assistance programs such as SNAP The elderly make up 4% of Long Island’s hungry. Seniors who are hungry experience depression and anxiety. They are also at increased risk for illness and disease. Food banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% of the food distributed by kitchens and 45% of the food distributed by shelters.          “ Over the course of last year, Long Island Cares has distributed over 14 million pounds of food, equating to 11.5 million meals. We are so proud to help out this amazing organization this year by having a food collection at our dealership located in the Huntington, Northport, and Commack area! April is Autism Acceptance Month and Mercedes-Benz of Huntington is aiming to bring some awareness to this complex condition. What Is Autism? Autism, also called Autism Spectrum Condition, is a lifelong developmental disability. Autism currently does not have one single cause, but it does appear during early childhood. Recognizing autism early on gives the individual the best chance of getting the help and support that they need to live a fulfilling life. Autism can look different for every person. It is characterized by persistent differences in communication, interpersonal relationships, and social interaction across different environments, according to Autism-Society.org. Get Involved There are many ways that you can get involved including donating and joining various communities. Organizations You Can Donate To: Organization for Autism Research (OAR) The Autism Community in Action The Autism Society of America The Asperger/Autism Network The Autism Science Foundation National Autistic Society & So Much More! Long Island Autism Community Involvement Part of the struggle that those with autism face is having a harder time with social interactions. One of our very own clients, Juliana Featherman, created an amazing app called Making Authentic Friendships. This app has created a community for those with special needs to find friends at home or on the go, based on their geolocation, diagnosis, age, and interests. The app prompts users to practice their social skills in a safe and friendly environment. Juliana’s main motivation behind the app came from the desire to see people like her brother Michael who was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, to live a more fulfilling life with meaningful friendships. As she says on her website, “Everyone deserves authentic friendships”. Be sure to check it out! Another Long Island Community that helps those with autism and other learning/ developmental disabilities is ACLD. ACLD is an organization in Deer Park, Long Island that aims to improve the quality of life for children, adolescents, and adults by giving them first-hand experience with life skills in a community setting. With residential and day habilitation, they have different styles of support for each individual based on their personal needs. We are so proud to be involved in such an amazing area such as Huntington, Northport, Greenlawn, Deer Park, Cold Spring Harbor, and other towns all over Long Island, that care so much about all of their residents. March is Women’s History Month in the United States, so what better time to brush up on our Mercedes-Benz history and talk about a woman who was monumental to the brand, Bertha Benz! Bertha Benz, at the time Bertha Ringer, was born in 1849, at a time when women were looked at as inferior, and denied access to a higher education. Unlike many women of this day and age who may further their education at Stonybrook University, NYU, SUNY Old Westbury, or Suffolk Community College, it was uncommon and abnormal to see a woman with a high education during her time. Bertha’s father, a carpenter, widely contributed to her interest in wanting something greater for herself through unconventional means for a woman. She was determined to show the world that women were highly capable of being equals. In the summer of 1869, Bertha met her soon to be husband, Carl Benz. Carl was a young engineer, who was working on a horseless carriage at the time, catching Bertha’s eye. The rest was history! Bertha and Carl’s lifestyle was not one of luxury given that Carl did not have much to his name. Bertha still prevailed. She even invested her dowry into the company that was built by Carl Benz. After a long period of struggle, the horseless carriage, now called the Motorwagen/ Motor Car, was finally registered under a patent. Although now the Motorwagen was official, no one seemed to be very interested. This was tough for a family of five, whose entire life had gone towards the creation of this brand new invention. Through adversity, Bertha decided that something had to be done. She decided she would take the first ever road trip known to any man or woman. The motorwagen would make its way from Mannheim to Pforzhiem in Germany, and show the world just what the future of automobiles could look like. Early one August morning, Bertha took two of her sons, Richard and Eugene, and embarked on her journey unbeknownst to her husband Carl. This road trip was to be no easy feat given that many of the roads were not suitable for any type of automobile. Unlike the paved roads of the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkwa y, or Jericho Turnpike that you see now, they were created for the use of horse-drawn carriages at the time and were rocky, uneven, and created upon dirt. Throughout the journey, Bertha and her sons faced many difficulties. Clogged valves, lack of fuel, and wire chafing were amongst the many problems solved by Bertha by unconventional and creative methods. With a garter, a hat pin, and the ligroin stock of all the pharmacies along the way as the star members of her toolbox, she was a woman on a mission. Bertha even had to push the motor wagen herself on multiple occasions when it had run out of gas! We are so blessed with many luxuries such as Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance for every time we face any problem, whether that be a battery jump, flat tire, or worse, that we can’t even imagine what that must have been like! Bertha’s hard work paid off. She and her mysterious new invention were the talk of many towns. Word spread about this new way to travel. After many decades, the motorwagen was widely accepted by the general public, with Bertha and Carl at the forefront of the start of the Automobile Industry. There was no denying that they were the pioneers of any automotive brand. It is absolutely mind boggling to see the evolution of our company starting at a simple little wagon such as the one that Bertha drove, make its way over to eventually having full-blown electric vehicles such as the Mercedes-EQ vehicles! Bertha’s hard work, determination, and strong beliefs that she could prove herself as intelligent regardless of her gender, are the key attributes to what was able to start the Mercedes-Benz brand, and those principles are still held through the company to this day. By the time of her 95th birthday, the Technical University of Karlsruhe proclaimed her an honorary senator. This was a crowning achievement for women everywhere due to the fact that Bertha herself was never allowed to study with the social constraints of her time. Bertha Benz is a role model for many women today, teaching them to never let their gender define them or persuade them they aren’t capable of any feat. We remember her strong resolve stepping into any model whether that be the entry level A-Class, the G-Class Wagon, AMG vehicle, or E-Class, as the very DNA that defines Mercedes-Benz. The month of November is a favorite amongst many due to the warm feelings that are associated with the season. Gratitude, appreciation, mindfulness, and thankfulness all come to mind during this time, and we love to feel it! With Thanksgiving this week and the holidays right around the corner, now is the best time for local businesses and companies to show their gratitude. This year, the Huntington Patch is hosting a “30 Days of Gratitude” Series on their website, where they will publish stories and letters from local people about people and things that they appreciate, are grateful for, and believe add something special to their lives. Our Wellbeing All of the things aforementioned are so wonderful, but most of all we are so grateful to be in a position to experience all of it.
