The winter season drastically changes our environment around us. It gets to very frigid temperatures, difficult weather conditions, and not to mention it gets darker out a lot earlier! However, our lives still continue with the winter season and the drawbacks that may come with it, especially in New York. The variety of options and features that are available in many Mercedes-Benz models can make driving in the winter a lot more bearable, and even enjoyable! Therefore, here are just a few of some great available features and options that can be a great asset for getting through the winter season. 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive The 4MATIC® all-wheel drive system can be seen as one of the best features to have during the winter months. From a blustery winter storm to a wet rainstorm, 4MATIC® all-wheel drive can handle it all, giving you extra grip on the road ahead of you. 4MATIC® features a number of advanced, and quick-thinking innovations to empower each wheel individually as conditions change, making it easier and safer for you as the driver, to continue on when conditions get tougher. The 4MATIC® system is available on most Mercedes-Benz models, therefore you have a variety of vehicles with 4MATIC® to choose from on your next car purchase! Heated Seats Picture this. You get in your Mercedes-Benz in the early morning, coffee in hand, ready to start your day. You sit down in the driver’s seat and it’s chilly from sitting the whole night! Heated seats are what will save the day from sitting in a cold seat. With three levels of warming available, the heated seats feature will take the chill out of any morning. The best part of the heated seats in a Mercedes-Benz is that once the seats are heated, it will automatically step down after several minutes to the lowest setting, keeping you cozy and comfortable on your drive. Heated Steering Wheel The heated steering wheel, like heated seats, is another “handy” feature to keep your hands warm during chilly winter mornings. Instead of trying to maneuver wearing gloves or mittens while driving, you can simply just push the heated steering wheel button to keep your hands nice and toasty while you grip the wheel. Similar to the heated seats, after a few minutes, the heating level is automatically reduced to maintain lasting comfort. Magic Vision Control Magic Vision Control changes the way you use your windshield washers, and is an efficient feature to have to clean your windshield during the winter. In the winter season, tons of road debris such as road salt, snow, slush, and much more can end up on your windshield. With MAGIC VISION CONTROL, you can wash away this debris smoothly and efficiently, without splashes of washer fluid getting in the way of your vision. Night View Assist PLUS During the winter, it gets darker out a lot earlier. Also, it can often seem that it’s a lot darker than usual during the winter. With this added darkness, it can be harder to see hazards on the road. However, Mercedes-Benz created a new feature with nighttime driving in mind, called Night View Assist PLUS. Available on select models, Night View Assist PLUS can help you navigate the dark road ahead of you, and point out any obstacles that you may come across. Night View Assist PLUS projects invisible infrared beams and reads them with a special camera. Combined with thermal imaging, the system can display a clearer, supplemental real-time view of the road ahead in the digital instrument cluster. Its advanced technology can also help identify and point out pedestrians and animals along a dark roadway, and help alert pedestrians with a flash of the LED headlamps in their direction! Crosswind Assist Crosswind Assist is another safety technology from Mercedes-Benz, that is standard on a lot of the larger models. During the winter, and especially during snowstorms, it can get very windy! Crosswind Assist helps your vehicle’s stability stay strong during strong side winds at highway speeds. The system helps keep the vehicle on the right track through braking of the wheels on one side of the vehicle. Dual Zone and 3-Zone Climate Control Your passengers you have along for the ride should be comfortable too! Many Mercedes-Benz models offer multi-zone climate controls, with Dual Zone Climate Control being standard on many models. 3-Zone Climate Control is also available, so that passengers in the rear of the vehicle can adjust the climate control to their preferred settings. It’s a great feature to have during the winter to keep everyone satisfied with the temperature! Electronic Stability Program (ESP) An important safety feature for the winter would be the Electronic Stability Program, or also known as ESP. ESP is a standard feature that was first introduced by Mercedes-Benz. The system continually monitors your driving inputs and the vehicle's motion to help keep it going in your intended direction, especially in corners and during evasive maneuvers. This is especially helpful in not so ideal winter conditions! If it detects wheel spin, severe understeer (plowing), or oversteer (fishtailing), ESP can brake individual wheels and reduce engine power to help bring the vehicle under control. The ESP program, like many of the other safety programs that are built into Mercedes-Benz models work to keep you and your occupants safe in all the roads that you travel. Brake Assist (BAS) Brake Assist, which is also known as BAS, senses emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal, and immediately applies maximum available power boost. Brake Assist decreases your stopping distance by applying emergency power to the brakes, that may not have been applied enough when braking. This is a standard safety feature across all models, and is a great feature to have in the winter when you may need to brake suddenly due to hazards on the road. Active Brake Assist Active Brake Assist takes Brake Assist a step further. Active Brake Assist uses radar technology to sense obstacles or hazards in the way that you may not realize. The system alerts you hazards you are approaching, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as the driver starts to brake, Active Brake Assist can automatically provide an appropriate level of braking to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity. If you fail to brake in time, the system can also initiate braking automatically from speeds up to 65 mph. The winter season arriving brings many things. The holidays are right around the corner, some snowy cozy days at home, and the chance to deck out in winter gear all come with the winter season. However, you should keep in mind that your vehicle is primarily outside and has to deal with all types of weather, such as rain, sleet, snow, and ice. While vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz’s are built with the highest quality and are always ready to take on the road ahead of them, there are still some precautions you should take to keep your vehicle in the best condition it can be! Luckily, our Service Department at Mercedes-Benz of Huntington is always available to help with whatever maintenance or repairs you should need. Here are some things to look out for and keep an eye on with your vehicle this winter. Battery More often than not, the primary cause for a car not starting is due to a dead battery. Many times, this issue sneaks up on people when they are not prepared at all. It’s not very fun to be stuck out in the cold when your car won’t start due to a dead battery! A great way to prevent this is to get your battery tested and inspected in the beginning of the winter, to make sure it is the strongest it can be! It’s usually more difficult for a battery to operate in colder weather rather than warmer weather, therefore it is highly recommended to get your battery tested for the winter. If you come to Mercedes-Benz of Huntington’s Service Department to get your vehicle’s battery tested, it will be inspected and tested by a Mercedes-Benz Certified Technician. Our Service Consultants can then report back to you the status of your battery, and if needed have the battery replaced. Tire Pressure More often than not, when the weather goes from warmer to colder, or vice versa, your tire pressure may need to be adjusted. Tire pressure can often decrease when the air temperature gets lower. With every 10-degree drop in temperature, your tires could lose as much as one pound per square inch, also known as your tire’s PSI. If your tire pressure light happens to come on, stop in to our Service Drive here at Mercedes-Benz of Huntington! One of our service drive attendants will be more than happy to inspect and adjust your tire pressure for you right in our service drive, free of charge! Tires Having your tires in good shape is very important for having added traction in winter weather conditions. A worn set of tires can lessen the grip you have on the road, especially in ice and snow. Winter and all-weather tires are available for purchase and installation at Mercedes-Benz of Huntington’s Service Department. Also, if you wish to have your tires checked for wear, you can drive into our service drive and drive through our TreadSpec Tread Depth Indicator, which will print out a report indicating your tire tread depth, as well as any indications of tire alignment issues. Washer Fluid The winter can get things messy sometimes! Picture this: you’re driving on the icy and snowy highway in the middle of winter, and you’re windshield gets covered in slush and salt residue from the roads. You go to use your windshield washers only to find out you are completely empty! It’s no fun to drive with a windshield covered in winter debris. Keeping your windshield washer fluid filled prevents situations like this from happening. Luckily, you can pull into the service drive in Mercedes-Benz of Huntington’s Service Department, and a service drive attendant can refill your washer fluid free of charge! Coolant Coolant is extremely important to your vehicle during the winter months, since it prevents the engine from freezing. Therefore, it’s important to make sure you have enough coolant in your car always, especially during the winter. If your coolant light turns on in your Mercedes-Benz, you can bring it to our Service Department to have it refilled and checked for any cracks or leaks. Lighting With the days getting darker sooner, that means you have to turn on your lights on your car earlier in the day as well. For many people, the sun sets on their commute home from work. It is important to be seen on the road, as well as being able to see the best you can on the road ahead of you. Be sure to inspect all your lights to make sure you do not have any that are out or malfunctioning! When it comes to tire tread wear, making sure you have the right levels of tread and traction is important, as it keeps your grip on the road and allows your vehicle to maintain optimal stopping distance, because when you have tires with poor tread depth, there are many dangers. Hazards of Poor Tire Tread Driving on tires with poor tread depth that have been worn out limits your vehicle's braking and driving abilities in many ways. If you were to drive a vehicle with tread wear at 60 miles per hour on a wet road, your vehicle's braking distance could be up to 10 additional car lengths than what a vehicle with full tread would stop at. Having good brakes simply is not enough, which is why we encourage all drivers to check their tire tread wear. Checking Tire Tread with the "Penny Test" Using the so-called "penny test" you can take a penny, and place it in between the tread of your tires with the head of Lincoln's bust facing down toward the tread. If the head disappears into the tread, it's a sign your tire tread is at suitable and ideal levels. If you are able to see all of the penny's head, it's a sign you should invest in a new set of tires, as the tread is not ideal, and is dangerous. Thanksgiving isn't all about turkeys, stuffing, football, and red wine. The name of the holiday is what it's really about. Giving thanks. (Even though all the food definitely adds a nice touch.) But that's the point. We should be thankful that we are able to put all that food on our table, that we have friends and family to share that table with us, and that we have a warm home to sleep in thanksgiving night. Sometimes, we get so caught up in our daily lives and hectic schedules that we forget to stop and take a moment to be truly thankful. And there's so much to be thankful for. Those jobs that we rush to every morning. The fact that we wake up in the morning. That special person we wake up next to in the morning. And so, so much more. Our dealership allows us to stop and take that moment to be thankful. Every year, the Buzzetta's take the time out of their busy schedules to stop and give each and every employee a turkey for Thanksgiving. (And these aren't little turkeys either - they're HUGE!) It's time like these that make us realize our job isn't just a job, it's more of a family.
