The GLE, formerly known as the M-Class, is a mid-size luxury SUV that’s been a mainstay in the Mercedes-Benz lineup since its introduction in 1998. The GLE is based on the same platform as other vehicles in Mercedes’ SUV lineup, namely the GLK and GLC. The Mercedes-Benz GLE has been a popular SUV for years, but now, the German manufacturer is facing stiff competition from Audi: The Q8. Here’s how the two crossovers stack up to each other:
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE has the same exterior dimensions as its predecessor but has a sleeker design. The SUV is about 8.2 inches longer than the 2022 Audi Q8 but has a similar wheelbase (103 inches). The front end of both SUVs looks very similar, with sharp LED headlights and grilles that have been restyled for 2020.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE features more chrome accents on its body than the 2022 Audi Q8. It also comes with unique fender flares that give it a more muscular appearance than its German rival.
The rear ends of each model feature large tail lights on either side of their rear doors and chrome exhaust pipes just below their taillights.
When it comes to the interior, there are a lot of similarities between these two vehicles. Both have similar infotainment systems with touchscreens, and both have plenty of space for passengers in the backseat. But there are also some key differences that make both vehicles special.

The GLE also comes with Active Brake Assist and Emergency Stop Signals. In addition, it has Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality. The system can also automatically accelerate or decelerate when following another vehicle at a set distance while traveling at high speeds on highways or motorways (upwards of 60 miles per hour). When it comes time to stop for an obstacle or hazard ahead of you—and this works even when using cruise control—the system will automatically brake for up to six seconds before resuming its previous speed setting.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that puts out around 362 horsepower and nearly 369 pound-feet of torque. The all-wheel-drive system is standard on all models except for the AMG® E 53, which comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 instead.
The 2022 Audi Q8 comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque (or 404 hp with the Sport S line). It also comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard equipment throughout the lineup.
With its larger body, more rear passenger space, and better off-road prowess, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE is the better SUV. It’s also a little more expensive than the 2022 Audi Q8—but it’s worth it if you want an SUV that can handle any situation, no matter how rough.
