The 2021 Jeep Gladiator lives up to its name, with a tough and hardened build which enables it to operate over any terrain. But is it enough to beat the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC, an SUV with spectacular looks and presentation, the latest tech features and AMG® level performance?
Visually, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is the complete opposite of the Jeep Gladiator. Whereas the Gladiator has indurated edges, the Mercedes-Benz is engineered with a smooth and lustrous exterior. It looks best with white leather, black wheels and oak trim, and within the cabin passengers will be treated to ten inch displays with surfaces covered in aluminum, carbon fiber and nappa leather. The MBUX infotainment is state of the art and highly regarded by everyone who has used it.
The Jeep Gladiator is boxy, and a cross between an SUV and truck. It has a single bed and cab configuration with 4 doors and a bed that is about five feet in length. The front half is similar to the Jeep Wrangler with a wider nose, and the wheelbase is slightly longer. Buyers get the option of a fold back roof or dark cloth top and the cabin is devoid of the luxury that is founded in the Mercedes-Benz.
The Jeep Gladiator has received a 4 star rating from the NHTSA. Its safety features are minimal, and include 4 airbags, a camera with rearview, parking sensors and blind area monitoring. Those that want emergency automated brakes will have to pay extra, as it doesn’t come standard, and perks within its cabin include 8.4 inch displays, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and powered locks and windows.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC is so safe to drive that it received a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. It is equipped with all the features found in the Jeep Gladiator, and a whole lot more including assistance when changing lanes, parking support, and a camera with surround view. The cabin is packed with all sorts of luxuries such as keyless start, heated/cooled seats, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, voice commands and climate control that cover multiple zones.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC is equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 255 horsepower that is wedded to an automatic nine speed transmission. The Jeep Gladiator answers with a V6, 3.6 liter engine that can generate 285 horsepower with 260 pounds of torque that is wedded to an automatic eight speed transmission.
While the Jeep Gladiator has lots of horsepower, its cabin is noisy and bland and it lacks the safety and luxury features of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which makes it the winner.
