2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS vs. 2020 Audi Q8

If you are in the market for a massively practical yet comfortable and refined vehicle, then the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS fits the bill so well. The cleverly-designed GLS is probably one of the biggest luxury full-sized vehicles but it is able to carry itself effortlessly well.  The GLS directly competes against the Range Rover and Tesla Model X but the 2020 Audi Q8 is also a befitting rival. The Q8 is also a large luxury car and although it is not as sleek as the GLS, it still is one of the top contenders in the same segment.

Design & Style

The GLS is not as sexy or flashy as the usual Mercedes but it does look the part of a luxury SUV. The old-school, serious look suits the GLS well. It has a wide grille, massive Mercedes-Benz logo, and thick horizontal bars up on the front that is flanked by LED headlights. The massive interior space can comfortably seat seven adults. It never feels cramped since the seats are comfortably plush.

The new Q8 is basically a Q7 but is fitted with a racier rear bumper. Its sporty styling is punctuated by a wider front and bigger nose compared to the last model year.

Technology & Safety

Another big characteristic on the GLS aside from the size is its infotainment system. The superb-quality graphics and simple yet attractive user interface are great. It is also such a treat to have a variety of ways to control the audio-navigation, especially the voice control that works accurately well. It is also equipped with a satellite radio and both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for endless road entertainment.

Audi is also particular with in-car tech and the Q8 has the sleek MMI to rival the Mercedes-Benz’ MBUX. There is also a number of driver aids on the Q8 that work nicely, save for the collision and lane-departure warning alerts that are too intrusive.

Performance

The V6 engine is more than enough for the GLS but you have the option to get the V8 engine with its 577 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. This set up is powerful and brawny but stays nice and quiet even through higher accelerations.

To ensure the best power delivery, the V6 engine of the Q8 is added with a mild-hybrid system. Even with the added 48-volt electric motor, it can only get up to 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.

The Bottom Line

The 2020 Audi Q8 is stylish and luxurious as a big SUV but is not as family-oriented as the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS. Hauling a huge group is not always a pretty sight but the GLS managed to look glamorous despite its gigantic body. The in-car tech is also one of its strongest points with all the added features that are meant for entertainment and safety.
