The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE started out as the M-Class and was released back in the late 1990s. This version is the newest addition to the “rugged” line of the luxury brand. It is regarded well mostly because it successfully combined a potent powertrain with an incredibly luxurious cabin. It embodies the literal meaning of the luxury crossover SUV and is a rightful top contender and the one to beat in this segment.
The 2019 BMW X7 is a late entry for the three-row luxury SUV segment. Its fine road manners and excellent interior, however, proves that it is worth the wait and it can be a good match against the new GLE.
The GLE’s exterior has more of a 20th-century vibe. The rugged appeal emanates from the fender flares. The fancy appeal extends to its interior where it really raised the bar for cabin design sophistication. The ambient lighting is a nice touch of elegance.
On the outside, the BMW X7 has a conventional silhouette of a common SUV. What made it look formidable are the twin BMW grilles that now look like a tall and ribbed radiator. The lack of cohesiveness in the exterior design is remedied by the posh and efficient interior.
It is difficult not to swoon at the tech features of the new GLE. Aside from the revolutionary MBUX infotainment, it comes with nifty in-car technologies like a fragrance diffuser, hot stone massage front seats, and the crystal clear 12.3-inch dual-display infotainment screens. The primary reason why it is tough to beat the GLE is because of these extra-special amenities that gives you a sense of genuine luxury.
The X7 has the BMW iDrive for its infotainment. It is responsive, quick, and logical but not as sophisticated as the MBUX.
The GLE’s performance is powered by a 255 hp engine with 273 lb-ft of torque. It has noteworthy road manners thanks to its available excellent suspension control, sharp steering, and terrific engine choice. Although it is not a serious off-roader, the GLE is mighty enough to tackle different adventurous obstacles. Its air suspension can easily climb through any mountainous terrain and it can easily accomplish wriggling out of sand and mud if needed.
The X7 comes in two trim levels that are powered by either a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine or a turbocharged V8. That being said, it can effortlessly deliver up to 456 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.
The 2019 BMW X7 is great but one cannot deny how attractive the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLE is. Both are superb road performers but the X7 and GLE are worlds apart when it comes down to having the best tech. The X7 and other contenders will find a very difficult time topping off the current technology features of the GLE.
