The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA is the smallest among the SUV lineup of the esteemed German auto brand. Along with the prestigious star badge are plenty of luxurious features, modern technologies, and one of the best performances in its segment. A new generation of GLA is set for 2021 thus the reason why the current version received minor revisions rather than a full redesign.
Another car that is shining in the SUV segment is the 2019 BMW X1. The tall ride height and the spacious interior are only a few of its attractive features. As a highly competitive segment, it would be fun to compare these two vehicles since they are both easy favorites.
The latest GLA is unmistakable with the flowing lines on its exterior. The compact profile boasts of a classic Mercedes-Benz character. The exterior is taut, muscular, and more prominent with the iconic grille. It also sports a confident stance, mainly because of the big wheels and the elegant chrome accents that are present on the roof and the bumpers.
The X1 may be attractive but it badly needs to be refreshed. The design cues are elegant and cohesive but it is now starting to look familiar thus making it less exciting.
The GLA offers a variety of ways to inform and entertain its driver and passengers. There is a large infotainment display that serves as the control center for everything, including the integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is also equipped with advanced driver aids that serve as virtual eyes on the road. It uses radars to give due alerts for potential hazards, collisions, and even when the driver is getting drowsy.
The X1’s infotainment is easy to operate and bundles together the essentials: navigation, audio, telephone, and the car’s system menu. It is intuitive but it lacks enough modern touches to make it as advanced as that of the GLA’s infotainment system.
The GLA has a 208 hp turbocharged engine that delivers a remarkably energetic driving. The engine does a great job at taking the GLA around without feeling sluggish. The handling remains sharp and athletic when cornering. It is also light to steer yet still very precise.
The X1 centered on giving the best performance with the 228 hp engine. It smoothly delivers power but it requires more effort to steer compared to the GLA.
Most drivers would be satisfied with the overall personality of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA compared to the 2019 BMW X1. It is easy to understand why, especially since both vehicles only have minor changes from their predecessors. The big difference, however, is that all the subtle changes on the GLA is meant to make it better. The X1 has improved but the changes are too subtle making it technically like the older versions.
