Check of the Engine, Fluids, and Filters This includes: Windshield Washer Fluid, Engine Oil Level, Brake Fluid Level, Transmission Fluid Level, Coolant Reservoir Fluid Level, Engine Oil Condition, Brake Fluid Condition, Hoses for Heating, AC and Coolant, Engine Air Filter, Air Conditioning and Pollen Filter, and Inspection of the Belts. Check of the Exterior, Suspension, and Drive Components This includes: Shocks/ Struts and Suspension Components, Steering and Steering Linkages, Exhaust System (Leaks, Damage, Loose Parts), Transmission/ Clutch Operation and Linkages, Windshield Condition, Wiper Wear and Spray Nozzles, and an Electrical Inspection (Horns, Signals, and Lights). October is National Car Care Month, making this the perfect time to read up on how to best prepare your Mercedes-Benz for the coming fall months. Saying goodbye to the warm weather and wineries on the North Fork or even out East of the Island such as the Wölffer Estate Vineyard, Roanoke Vineyards, the Macari Vineyards, or even Del Vino Vineyards in Northport is hard, but Suffolk County and New York specifically, gets extremely cold in the fall and winter months, so making some changes in how you take care of your car is integral to it’s lifespan and overall the quality of how your car will drive under the harsh chilling conditions and circumstances. Here are some great points to keep in mind when taking care of your car from Mercedes-Benz of Huntington or anywhere else, this fall and winter. Check Your Tires. Whether you’re using Michelin, Goodyear, or even Pirelli, your tires play an obvious but important role for your car. They endure the hazards of the road to keep you on your way to wherever life takes you whether that be work, groceries at the King Kullen on New York Avenue, Stop & Shop in Huntington Village, IGA Supermarket in Fort Salonga, your doctor’s office in Greenlawn, or even the Brentwood Train Station. You can make sure your tires are kept in good condition by checking your tread and pressure about once a week. Although you may have some time before purchasing your winter tires from our Tire Store with our Parts Department, they still may be in need of replacement, especially since the constantly up-and-down weather in the fall causes tire pressures to drop and rise. Check Your Fluids. With all the summer road tripping to the Catskills, Adirondacks, Hudson Valley, Bear Mountain, and even across the country driving to colleges, like the University of Albany, the University of Rhode Island, or even somewhere in Suffolk County such as Stony Brook University, your vehicle uses more of its resources than you may think. Be sure to check on your coolant, engine oil, power steering, wiper, brake, and transmission fluid. If they seem to be low, stop into our service drive, where you won’t even have to leave your car and your fluids can be topped off! Check Your Windshield Wipers and Your Lights. When the Cold Spring Harbor roads start getting colder, making them more icy and slippery, it’s imperative that you are able to see properly by having wipers that work, as well as that you are able to be seen by checking to see if your headlights and tail lamps are in working condition. Not only will the roads become more challenging to drive on, but it will also become darker sooner in the day in New York, an even bigger reason to make sure that both your lights and wipers are in good condition! Look Over Your Belts and Hoses. When you don’t regularly check your hoses and belts, it can lead to an unexpected high repair cost when you finally see a hose is too loose or a belt is far too damaged to drive your car. Catch them with some time to spare with regular inspections and have them replaced once they start showing signs of wear and tear. Inspect Your Brakes. While you should be checking your brakes year round, during the colder months is a time when driving with inadequate brake pads or rotors is especially risky. Brakes in bad condition can lead to danger on wet, icy, snow covered, or slushy roads in the winter. You don’t want to be stranded on the side of Commack Road after a winter mishap, so its better to get your brake repair in Huntington before it's too late! Test Your Battery. Perhaps arguably one of the most important things you’ll want to check on is your battery. In the summer, the heat drains your battery, while the fall and winter chill kills them. The time in between fall to winter is the time when most people’s batteries end up needing to be replaced so be sure to have your battery tested for corrosion, starting and charging, having the fluids and charge checked, to be sure you don’t end up stranded with a dead battery! We’ve all been there. Driving, running errands, whether it be shopping at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington, or shopping for groceries at Whole Foods in Commack, when suddenly our dashboard illustrates a warning light. Fifty percent of people either ignore said warning light to worry about it at a later time, while the other fifty percent of people rush to their web browser on their IPhone or Android to find out what could possibly have gone amiss in their GLA 250, C 300, or even their E 350. If you are one of the latter fifty percent of people, you are in luck! We’re here to mitigate your curiosity. Tire Pressure Light In the case that this light appears on your dashboard, it simply means that one (or multiple) of your tires has low pressure. On newer cars in the fleet, your dash can even tell you what tire pressure each of your tires is currently at, helping you find out exactly which one needs more air. Gas Light When this warning light appears, it means that your vehicle’s gas/fuel level is getting low. The great thing for those that have the “Hey Mercedes” feature, is that you can ask her to take you to the nearest gas station, or even a gas station on your way home. For example, you can say “Hey Mercedes, take me to the nearest Commack gas station.” and she will figure out which is closest to you! Check Engine Light Some may call it a submarine, but this is indeed a check engine light. This could be a problem with your engine system, the exhaust, the fuel injection system, or even the ignition system. When this light comes on, you should take your vehicle into our Service Department in the Dix Hills vicinity to get looked at. Seat Belt Indicator This one is one of the easier signs to recognize, you may have even seen it this morning when you accidentally forgot to put your seatbelt on while rushing to get to your doctor’s appointment in East Northport! Simply putting your (and your passenger’s) seat belt on gets rid of this light. Battery Light This light means that the battery is not being charged, or that it has lost its charge in your vehicle. You may require a jump or even to replace the battery. Have one of our staff members from the Service Department help you with a Diagnosis to see what is needed. Airbag Light The airbag light means that your SRS system may have a fault. This SRS malfunction could result in your airbag not being deployed in case of any accident or emergency. It is recommended that you see Service to prevent any danger that could result from not having a functional airbag. Brake Wear The brake light means that either your brake rotors or pads have been worn, and are in need of replacing. Parking Brake Light The parking brake light is as easy as it sounds, your parking brake is in place. Many of those that live in the sloped areas of Cold Spring Harbor leave this on accidentally when parking in the street. If driving, release the parking brake so as to not damage your vehicle. Coolant Light This light could mean that either your vehicle’s coolant level is low, or that there could be an issue with the coolant system. ABS Light The ABS Light signifies that your ABS brake system may have a malfunction. You will still be able to start and stop but extra functions may be limited such as, Electronic Stability Program, Brake Assist, and Anti-Locking, on your brakes. ESP/ESC Light Electronic Stability Program / Electronic Stability Control functions are limited, meaning that when making turns, skidding on slippery surfaces, or braking, you do not have the extra stability the ESP program provides. These warning lights are the most common that appear on dashboards for Centerport, Greenlawn, Northport, and surrounding areas’ driver's vehicles.
