It used to be that subcompact vehicles were seen as cheap, cramped, and basic. The only thing that made it interesting is the price and fuel economy. That kind of subcompact cars is almost non-existent these days. Most of the cars in this segment now come with plenty of features, more room, and a wider price point.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the 019 BMW 2-Series are cars that offer only the best in the subcompact line since they are made by luxury brands. They are typically commendable because of the surprising levels of superb amenities that they have.
The all-new A-Class has an attractive silhouette that is reminiscent of its sedan roots. This year’s model has a sporty appeal thanks to the short front and rear overhangs. The hood is also a bit longer but the deck has shorter proportions. There are also wheel arches that look good especially with 19-inch wheels.
Back in the 1960s, the BMW 2002 sent many hearts aflutter because of its stylish details. The latest 2-Series channels that classic styling and added a little more glass, lower window line, and more aggressive-looking shoulders. For its interior, many would find the legroom in the rear is so cramped that adults will find it uncomfortable.
The MBUX system of the A-Class is made more dazzling with clear graphics and a classy appearance. It features a state-of-the-art voice recognition software and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for connectivity. The extensive suite of driver aids includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and more.
The standard infotainment system of the 2-Series comes with only one USB port, a logical menu system, and a rotary knob for controlling everything. The navigation system is optional, there is no Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay is free only for a year
Under the A-Class’ hood is a 2.0-liter engine for 188 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The standard front-wheel drive is responsive and intuitive. The steering assist feature has different levels depending on the drive mode that is selected. Driving composure is excellent and there is more than enough road grip during turns.
The 2.0-liter engine of the 2-Series is turbocharged to have 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It has a capable chassis, accurate steering, and provides smooth and quick shifts.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is simply stunning as a subcompact. Its overall aesthetics is well-executed, the interior is amazing with the addition of ambient lighting, and it is very capable with its solid performance. The 2019 BMW 2-Series, on the other hand, has a good performance but it lacks a lot of tech features that are already standard on most luxury subcompacts.
